Guide: Sutherland

Sutherland, at the northern tip of Scotland, contains some of the most dramatic landscapes in Britain, with coastal cliffs, vast empty moorlands and isolated mountains such as Suilven, Foinaven, Arkle or Ben Hope competing for attention. The area is very sparcely populated, with most of the villages on the coast and a total population less than a medium sized town. The county stretches from the north sea coast in the east to the Atlantic in the west and north, although the most famous point on the north coast, John o'Groats, lies within Caithness, an historical county that contains the north-eastern tip of Scotland.
