St Kilda

St Kilda is the largest of a small group of remote islands, located 41 miles to the west of Benbecula in the Outer Hebrides. The other islands in the group are much smaller and include Boreray to the north, Soay to the west and Dun to the south-east. Soay and Boreray also gave their names to two breeds of sheep that were once important for the islanders.

St Kilda was inhabited until the 1930s when the last inhabitants asked to be evacuated as life got too difficult. One of their main sources of food were sea bird eggs taken at great risk from the high sea cliffs.

The island is now a National Nature Reserve and a spectacular bird sanctuary.
