Scalpay (or Scalpaigh) is a small island off the east coast of North Harris, at the entrance to Loch an Tairbearit. At the eastern end of the island is Eilean Glas Lighthouse, one of the first four built in Scotland. The first lighthouse keeper served for 35 years, starting in 1789. The current lighthouse dates to 1824 and it was automated in 1978. The lighthouse can be reached on foot from the end of the motor road, following a line of long poles that mark the route across the moors.
