Howmore (South Uist)

Howmore (or Tobha Mor) is a small village close to the west coast of South Uist.

Howmore is best known for its collection of ruined medieval churches and chapels. There are two churches, both of which have been reduced to part of their east gable. The larger is the 13th century parish church of St. Mary (Teampall Mor or Mhoire). The smaller church, Dermot's Chapel (Caibeal Dhiarmaid) is a little further east. Remains of two chapels survive. To the north-east is Caibeal Chlann 'ic Ailein (Clanranald's chapel), which was probably built in its final form in around 1574 but that contains earlier material. Dugall's Chapel (Caibeal Dubhghaill) is a small cell with thick walls and steep gables and sits outside the main area.

Howmore also has a more modern church, built in 1858, unusual in that it has a central communion table.
