Harris is the southern part of the twin island of Harris and Lewis, a single landmass with two names. The division line runs between Loch Resort/ Reasort on the west coast and Loch Seaoforth/ Shiphoirt on the east coast. Harris itself falls into two halves.
South Harris is almost a separate island, linked to North Harris by a narrow piece of land at Tarbert. North Harris is the most mountainous part of the larger part of the joint island.
The shore of South Harris is lined with villages, including Rodel in the south and Northton in the west.
Harris is littered with pre-historic remains. These include the MacLeod Stone, a Neolithic standing stone that can be found on a headland north of Horgabost, overlooking the beach of Nisabost.
North Harris is a good place to see Golden Eagles. Glen Meavaig, which can be reached from the coastal B887, is one of the best places to try and find these birds.
