We start at the main car park in Hawkshead. Leave this car park through the small gate that leads onto the road that runs to the south of Hawkshead. Turn left onto this road and follow it east away from Hawkshead.

Just east of Hawkshead, our road crosses a bridge over the Black Beck. Just beyond the bridge, turn left onto a side road that heads off to the north east towards the small hamlet of Coltshouse. Follow this road as it zigzags through Coltshouse and on as it runs north

Half a mile north of Coltshouse, we pass a t-junction where another small road joins our road from the left. Just beyond this junction turn right onto a footpath that climbs up across the field to the east of the road, heading towards a clump of trees in the opposite corner of the field.

At the edge of this clump of trees our path crosses a wall and continues to climb, alongside a small beck. After a short distance inside the trees there is a junction in the path. The right hand branch runs alongside the wall, and will be our return route. For the moment take the left hand branch, cross over the stream and follow it as it climbs up the western slopes of Latterbarrow. The climb leads up to the north-west corner of the summit plateau, and then turns slightly to the right and heads up towards the monument at the summit of Latterbarrow.

The monument is surrounded by an irregular patch of open ground. Our route onwards begins at the southern tip of this patch of open ground, and heads downhill almost due south.

At the bottom of the slope we meet another path at a t-junction. Turn right and follow this path as it runs alongside a wall, eventually leading back to the road. From the road we retrace our steps back to Hawkshead.
