The name Warcop is familiar to travellers along the A 66, who associate it with the MOD base next to the road and the associated firing ranging on the hills above. In fact the village itself lies between the A 66 and the River Eden, and is now bypassed by the main road. The village is quite sizable, with the army base at the northern end.
