Stanhope is a small town that for me sits at the boundary between the wilder upper reaches of Weardale and the more gentle lower reaches. The town sits at a crossroads, with the main road up Weardale running from west-to-east and the road from Barnard Castle to the Derwent Valley and Consett running north-to-south. The crossroads is at the western end of the town, as it the valley of Stanhope Burn, with the town running east along the northern side of the Wear.
