Skirwith is one of the villages that sits close to the western edge of the North Pennines. Unusually Skirwith Beck runs along the length of the village, with both running west-east. The main village street runs along the northern bank of the beck, but another street runs along the southern side, with the church towards its end. Skirwith Hall is just to the west of the village while Skirwith Abbey is to the south.
