Scale Houses is a small hamlet on the western edge of the North Pennines. The hamlet sits back from the nearest road, running along the opposite side of a square of small lanes (two parallel lanes run out from the main road to the village and are connected by a third lane, which contains the buildings. The ground slopes away to the south of the village, while a small beck runs just to the north before the land begins to climb up to the high Pennines.
