Hury is a scattered community that sits just to the north of the Hury Reservoir, the lowest of three reservoirs on the River Balder, a tributary of the River Tees. Hury is at the gentle end of the valley, which becomes increasingly wild as one heads west past Blackton Reservoir and Balderhead Reservoir (roads run up both sides of the valley, with the northern road ending alongside Balderhead Reservoir and the southern road ending above the western end of Blackton Reservoir.
