Wick

Wick is a small town on the east coast of Caithness, with a population of just over 7,000. The town probably dates to the Norwegian period.

Wick is now at the at the end of the railway, but between 1903 and 1944 it was also served by the shortest lived and most northern branch line in the UK, the Wick & Lybster Light Railway. This ran south along the coast, serving a series of fishing villages. The line rarely made any money, although did have a boost when Wick became a dry town in 1921 and local drinkers used the railway to reach Lybster. In 1944, with money and materials short, the railway was closed.

The town is well connected by road. The A99 passes through the town on its way to John o' Groats, while the A882 runs west to Thurso.

Wick is the home of the Old Pulteney Distillery, which produces some of the highest rated Malt whisky in the world.
