Startforth is a village that sits on the opposite side of the River Tees to Barnard Castle, and that is now effectively a suburb of the town. There are some great views of the castle of Barnard Castle from Startforth, and some great walks along the Tees, including one that runs to the remains of the Premonstratensian establishment at Egglestone Abbey.
