Milburn is one of the series of villages that lie at the foot of the western edge of the North Pennines, and is on the lower slopes of Great Dun Fell (easily identified because of the radar station on its summit). Milburn is an unusual village - most of the houses are arranged around a rectangular village green, with the village road running up the middle of the green, with lanes leaving at each corner. Roads leave via the north-western and south-western corners, but another country lane bypasses the village to the west.
