Melmerby is one of the largest in the series of villages that run along the western foot of the North Pennines, in this case sitting at the foot of the 710m/ 2,330ft high Melmerby Fell. The village is also at the foot of the road across the Pennines that links Penrith to Alston and that passes Hartside Café, an isolated and often very welcome café with spectacular views towards the Scottish borders and the northern part of the Lake District.
