Hill End is an aptly named hamlet that sits at the eastern end of Catterick, an angular fell that forms the eastern ridge of an area of higher ground that peaks at 675m/ 2214ft between Westernhope Moor and Newbiggin Common. Steep slopes run down to the north, east and south of the hamlet, with the more gentle slopes of the ridge to the west. To the north the hills run down steeply to the River Wear, close to Frosterley.
