Cotherstone is an attractive large village on the southern side of the River Tees, just upstream of Barnard Castle. The River Balder flows into the Tees along the northern side of the village. The earthwork remains of Cotherstone Castle can be found to the north-east of the village, between the Tees and the main part of the village.
